IZMIRDAIKINSERVISI.COM – Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez secured second place on the podium during the MotoGP Qatar sprint race. He admitted to playing it safe.
At the Lusail Circuit in Qatar, on Sunday (April 13, 2025), Ducati’s Marc Marquez emerged as the winner. The rider, known as Baby Alien, clocked a time of 20 minutes and 38.304 seconds.
Alex Marquez finished second, trailing Marc Marquez by 1.577 seconds. Franco Morbidelli from Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing came third.
At one point, Alex Marquez attempted to overtake his brother but was unsuccessful and nearly crashed. Supported by Federal Oil, the 28-year-old chose to play it safe to retain valuable points.
“We tried today, but it didn’t work out. I wasn’t keen on overtaking in that braking spot, yet Marc did so earlier to me, ending the attack there. I almost fell at the second corner while still close to him, which made me realize that taking risks wasn’t worth it,” Alex Marquez explained in a statement received by us.
“We secured some crucial points for the championship and gathered valuable data ahead of the main race. Today, Marc was faster, and we need to accept that,” he added.
Alex Marquez’s teammate in Gresini Racing, Fermin Aldeguer, finished fourth during the sprint race. As one of the rookies this MotoGP season, he aims for better results in the main race set for Monday (April 14), early hours WIB.
“I’m very pleased; I knew I could perform better. I debated between soft or medium tires and chose to be bold, which paid off. We were very fast in the final part and felt good throughout this weekend—since the start. I’ve learned a lot and raced swiftly with the leading riders,” Fermin remarked.
“We’ll push harder again in Sunday’s night race to aim for a top-five finish,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Marc Marquez leads the 2025 MotoGP standings with 98 points. Alex Marquez is second, just two points behind. Fermin Aldeguer’s additional six points moved him to 17th place with a total of nine points.
